If a hailstorm has just moved through your DFW neighborhood, you probably have two questions: is my roof damaged, and will insurance pay for it? This guide walks through the claim process the way the Texas Department of Insurance recommends, and explains the Texas laws every homeowner should know before hiring a roofer.
Step 1: Document Everything Before You Touch Anything
Take photos and video of your roof from the ground, along with damaged gutters, vents, siding, and any interior ceiling stains. Write down the date and what the weather was doing; steps the Texas Department of Insurance recommends after every storm. Don’t throw anything away until your insurance company tells you to; the adjuster will want to see the damage as it is.
Step 2: Make Temporary Repairs Only
Make safe temporary repairs to prevent additional damage, save receipts, and avoid permanent repairs before your adjuster inspects the damage, as TDI recommends. Do not climb onto a damaged roof. Ask a qualified contractor to handle roof tarping or other work at height. Reimbursement depends on your policy.
Step 3: Call Your Insurance Company Promptly
TDI recommends reporting damage as soon as possible. Ask your carrier about the deadlines and documentation required under your policy. Write down the claim number and keep a record of each conversation.
Step 4: Be There When the Adjuster Visits
TDI recommends being present for the inspection, pointing out damage, and comparing contractor bids with the adjuster’s report. Ask whether your contractor can attend to explain the observed damage and proposed repair scope. Your insurer determines coverage; your contractor provides the repair estimate.
Step 5: Know the Deductible Laws
Texas law prohibits contractors and roofers from offering to waive or rebate your deductible. Your insurer may request proof that you paid it, such as a receipt or canceled check. Be cautious of an offer to make the deductible disappear, and ask your insurer if you are unsure how a proposed payment arrangement works.
Step 6: Understand How the Payment Works
Ask your insurer whether your roof is covered on a replacement-cost or actual-cash-value basis, whether depreciation is recoverable, and what conditions must be met for any remaining payment. Confirm your wind-and-hail deductible and all repair deadlines in writing. Do not assume that an approved claim covers every item in a contractor’s estimate.
Beware of Storm Chasers
Be cautious of pressure to sign immediately or pay a large amount upfront. TDI recommends getting multiple bids and comparing them with the adjuster’s report. Check references, ask for proof of insurance, and read the contract before authorizing work.
