After a hailstorm rolls through Plano, Frisco, or Lewisville, the door-knockers arrive within days. Most are honest; some are not. The Texas Department of Insurance publishes consumer guidance specifically about roofing scams, and it lines up with the Texas Department of Insurance’s own scam guidance; and with what we’ve seen across our 13+ years in the roofing industry. Here’s how to protect yourself.
Red Flags That Should Stop the Conversation
- “We’ll waive your deductible.” Texas law prohibits offers to waive or rebate a deductible. Treat such an offer as a warning sign and confirm payment requirements with your insurer.
- Pressure to sign today. Storm-chasers need you committed before their competitors get to your door. A legitimate roofer’s offer doesn’t expire in 24 hours.
- No local presence. Ask for a physical local address. If the company appeared with the storm and has no history here, warranty service later is a gamble.
- Large upfront-payment demands. Read the payment schedule carefully and compare bids before committing. TDI’s storm-recovery guidance explains how to document damage and avoid contracting problems.
- No written estimate. If it isn’t written down, it doesn’t exist.
What Good Contractors Have in Common
- Local references you can drive by. Ask for addresses of recent jobs in your neighborhood.
- Proof of insurance. Ask for a current certificate of liability insurance, and confirm the policy is active before work begins.
- Manufacturer certifications. Major shingle manufacturers certify their top installers; certification usually unlocks stronger warranties.
- Experience with insurance claims. If your repair will go through insurance, your contractor should be comfortable meeting the adjuster and documenting damage to the carrier’s standards.
- A verifiable reputation. Check reviews on Google and the Better Business Bureau, and ask how long the company has operated under the same name.
One Simple Rule
Get two or three bids and compare them line by line; not just by the total. The cheapest bid after a storm is often the most expensive by the time the rework is done.
